ARRIVING IN THE KINGDOM

Getting Into Bhutan

Almost every trip begins with one of the most dramatic landings in commercial aviation — here’s how to get to Paro, and what happens when you land.

BY AIR

Flying Into Paro International Airport

Paro is Bhutan’s only international airport, set in a narrow valley surrounded by peaks up to 5,500 metres — the approach is flown manually by a small number of specially certified pilots, and it’s routinely ranked among the most spectacular landings in the world.

Two airlines fly into Paro: Drukair (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and Bhutan Airlines. Both operate from a handful of gateway cities — Delhi, Kolkata and Bagdogra in India, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Singapore, and Dhaka are the most common connections. Flights are seasonal and fill up quickly around festival dates, so we recommend booking as soon as your tour package is confirmed.

BY LAND

Crossing Overland From India

Bhutan can also be entered overland through Phuentsholing, on the border with West Bengal, India — a popular route for travellers combining Bhutan with a wider Indian itinerary, or arriving via Bagdogra airport (near Siliguri, roughly a 4–5 hour drive from the border).

Indian nationals can cross with a valid passport or voter ID; all other nationalities still require visa clearance arranged in advance, exactly as with air arrival. We can arrange your entry permit for either route as part of your tour package.
