Visa & Sustainable Development Fee

Bhutan doesn’t offer independent tourist visas — here’s exactly how the visa and SDF process works, and what Mayura Travel handles for you.

HOW IT'S DIFFERENT

You Can't Apply for a Bhutan Visa Yourself

For most nationalities, a Bhutan tourist visa can only be arranged through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator — there is no walk-in or online application open to individual travellers. As a registered operator, Mayura Travel submits your visa application and pays the associated Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) on your behalf as part of every tour package.

Citizens of India, Bangladesh and the Maldives follow a different, simpler process — no visa is required, only a permit, and the SDF is charged at a reduced rate. We handle both processes the same way: you send your passport details, we handle the paperwork.

THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FEE

What the SDF Actually Pays For

What Is the SDF?

The Sustainable Development Fee is a daily charge that funds Bhutan's free healthcare, free education, and environmental conservation — the mechanism behind the country's carbon-negative status.

How Much Is It?

USD 100 per person, per night for most international visitors. Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian nationals pay a reduced rate in local currency. [CONFIRM CURRENT SDF RATE before publishing.]

Discounts

Children aged 6–12 receive a reduced rate; children under 6 are exempt. Rates are confirmed at the time of booking.

THE PROCESS

A clear scan of your passport’s photo page — that’s all we need to start.

03

We Submit the Application

Mayura Travel files your visa application and SDF payment with the Department of Tourism.

04

Receive Your Visa Clearance

A visa clearance letter arrives by email, usually within 5–7 working days — present it at Paro on arrival for your visa stamp.

Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates

A passport-style photo (digital is fine)

Your international arrival and departure flight details, once booked

Full trip payment, cleared before the visa clearance letter is issued
